Watch soldiers in Afghanistan shoot off an expensive Excalibur round

January 18, 2017

When it comes to war, field artillery can end things really quick with a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) taking out an entire grid square in only a matter of minutes. The MRLS will not only destroy the enemy, but it will also take out every building nearby, and in war, eliminating collateral damage is key.

The Excalibur round is a relatively new field artillery shell that is GPS guided to limit collateral damage. In doing so, it can focus on a specific spot and be directed right towards the enemy.

At about $80,000 per shell, it definitely shouldn’t be shot around like a standard bullet. However, it is a great asset to use when you’re just looking to blow up a building or bunker, not an entire city.
