Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), the U.S. military’s operational name for the intervention against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (which includes Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel) which began in 2014, has continued under Secretary James Mattis since he was sworn in as head of the Pentagon on Friday.
Each day, the Department of Defense releases strike reports from the Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) alerting the public about the progress of the mission against the Islamic State in the region. The CJTF defines a strike as a “means one or more kinetic events that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect for that location.”
They also specify that ground-based artillery “fired in counter-fire or in fire support to maneuver roles are not classified as a strike.”
Since taking office, Secretary Mattis has overseen the 92 strikes against the Islamic State. The CJTF has successfully targeted oil wellheads, tactical units, vehicles, and more.
Take a look at the strike reports from Syria and Iraq since Mattis took office:
