Children in Athens, Tennessee got quite the surprise this Christmas when one police officer drove around the town handing out presents like the real life Santa Claus.
“When kids see the police car, they always wonder like ‘Wow, the police!'” said Officer Michael Stainbrook, “And then when they see me coming out with the toys, they treat me like Santa Claus.”
Officer Stainbrook has been with Athens PD for two years, and he said he wants to make sure the community knows what the police are for.
“We’re here to make them feel safe and to make the community feel safe,” said Officer Stainbrook, “and us giving the kids toys and stuff like that, it makes them feel better about us.”
In addition to handing out presents during the day, Athens PD takes part in the annual parade through the town. At the end of it, Officer Stainbrook says it’s mission accomplished.
“Kids are happy, I’m happy, it’s a good Christmas Day,” said Stainbrook.
