Nearly 20 years ago, Shirley Gibson’s police officer son was shot and killed in the line of duty at the age of 27. In order to cope with the loss of her son, Shirley made it her mission to feed the police officers a home-cooked holiday meal every meal, and to make herself available to other families coping with lost loved ones.
Since 1997, Shirley has organized and managed the sizable task of feeding these officers herself. This past year, when she pulled up to her local Costco to begin shopping, she was amazed to see dozens of DC officers surrounding the entrance.
“She has dedicated her life since the loss of her son to helping other families who have lost their sons in law enforcement,” said Interim Police Chief Peter Newsham.
Shirley has said that this year was her last, and that the 20 year tradition helped her immensely.
