A fisherman in Jasper County, TX found the body of a missing Army veteran on Thursday. The 23-year-old veteran, Amon Gift, was found in a cove at Lake Sam Rayburn almost one week after his mysterious disappearance from the Houston area.
Savannah Gift, Amon’s wife, told ABC13 that she last communicated with Amon the previous Friday. He sent her a text message claiming he was at Mill Creek Park in Brookeland, Texas. She states that his phone was turned off shortly after she received that message and she could no longer get a hold on Amon.
According to his friends and family, Gift served in Afghanistan and was suffering through severe bouts of PTSD shortly before his disappearance. The Jasper County Sheriff’s office states that Gift was killed by a gunshot wound. An investigation to determine whether the wound was self-inflicted or cause for a homicide investigation is currently underway, but Police have stated that they believe the wound is the result of foul-play.
A 2008 Dodge Durango SXT that belongs to Gift was found in Jasper County on Tuesday, two days before his body was found. The truck was found on a road described as “impassible” by police. A note was written on a window of Gift’s truck bearing the words “look ahead.” Police searched the area but were unable to find any clues related to Gift’s disappearance.
The investigation is currently underway. Houston police are asking for assistance in solving Amon’s case. If you know of his current whereabouts or if you have any information concerning his disappearance, you’re asked to contact the Houston Police Department at 832-394-1840 or Texas EquuSearch at 281-309-9500.
