Whether you like the price or not, the Lockheed Martin Lightning II F-35 fighter jet is making its debut with the Israel Air Force (IAF). One of the most polarizing military projects in recent memory, the F-35 has made its namesake infamous, becoming a “lightning” rod for critics of excessive military spending. The Joint Strike Fighter program is the most expensive military weapons system in history, and it has been the object of much criticism from those inside and outside government, in the U.S. and in allied countries.
The F-35 JSF development is being principally funded by the United States with additional funding from partner nations that are either NATO members or close U.S. allies. In addition to the funding partners, several nations have ordered the plane, like in the case of the Israel Defense Forces. This video shows the IAF pilots take off for the first time in the new F-35 Adir and take a joyride over Israel.
