On Thursday, President-elect Donald Trump selected retired Marine General James “Mad Dog” Mattis to become the next Secretary of Defense.
Trump made the announcement at a rally in Cincinnati calling Mattis, “the closest thing we have to Gen. George Patton.”
After announcing that Mattis was his pick, Trump made the joke that the media and audience should keep the news to themselves.
“We are going to be announcing him Monday of next week,” Trump said. “Keep it inside the room.”
Mattis led the United States Central Command from 2010 to when he retired in 2013. The Obama administration did’t have much trust in Mattis because they believed he was eager to have a military confrontation with Iran.
Mattis also commanded the 1st Marine Division during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
