On Sunday, the Iranian Defense Minister, Hossein Dehghan, spoke at a security conference in Tehran and issued a dire warning that if President-elect Donald Trump does any tampering with the nuclear deal, that it would mean “the destruction” of Israel and the Gulf states. Dehghan told the conference that his country is completely prepared to start World War III but feel that Trump, as a businessman, will know better than to try to change the nuclear pact as it stands.
“Considering Trump’s character and that he measures the cost of everything in dollars, it does not seem likely that he would take strong action against our country,” the Iranian Defense Minister said.
Dehghan continued on to say that if Trump did decide to make modifications to the Iran Deal that the consequences of such a move would be the “destruction” of Israel and the Gulf states.
“Enemies may want to impose a war on us based on false calculations and only taking into consideration their material capabilities,” Dehghan said. “Such a war would mean the destruction of the Zionist regime (Israel) … and will engulf the whole region and could lead to a world war.”
“Among other consequences of the war would be the destruction of the city-states on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf, because they lack popular support,” he said, referring to the Gulf states of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar.
During his Presidential campaign and since winning the election, President-elect Trump has been very vocal about his opposition to the Iran Deal. Trump has stated that he believes the nuclear pact is a “disaster” and called it “the worst deal ever negotiated.”
