On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump spoke on the phone with co-host of the The Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski, who asked the President-elect to clarify his tweet on Thursday which read: “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.”
“Let it be an arms race,” Trump told Brzezinski, who relayed the quote on the show following the phone call. “We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all.”
Trump spokesman Sean Spicer, who was just announced as the next White House spokesperson, told NBC Friday that the President-elect would not allow an arms race.
“He’s going to ensure that other countries get the message that he’s not going to sit back and allow that,” Spicer said. “And what’s going to happen is they will come to their senses, and we will all be just fine.”
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke in front of his defense ministry and said: “We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defense systems.”
