Watch Footage Of Ukrainian Army Soldiers Encountering Separatists In Sloviansk During The Crisis In Eastern Ukraine

November 07, 2016

In the aftermath of the Euromaidan movement and the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, demonstrations by pro-Russian and anti-government groups started taking place in major cities across the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine. One of these focal points of unrest was the city of Sloviansk. Founded by Russian tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich in 1645 as a border fortress against the Crimean attacks and slave raids on the southern suburbs of the Russian State, the city was one of the focal points in the early stages of the 2014 pro-Russian conflict in Ukraine.

The city was held by separatist forces until July 5, 2014, when pressed by the Ukrainian army forces they had to retreat from Sloviansk and pull back to Donetsk city. This is footage of scenes that took place during the Spring of 2014, when Ukrainian forces started to make their move on the city before finally retaking it from them.
