Armed with turret-mounted machine guns aboard their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, U.S. soldiers with the 3rd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade lit up the field at the 7th Army Training Command’s Grafenwoehr Training Area in Germany.
Nicknamed the “Old Ironsides”, the 1st Armored Division is a combined arms division part of III Corps, out of Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
It has the distinction of being the first armored division of the U.S. Army to see battle in World War II. With that much reputation riding on their backs, the Iron Soldiers of the Old Ironsides need to stay sharp, on top of their games, and ready to light up the enemy wherever they’re called. No doubts about that.
