Italian Navy Modernizes Its Fleet Of Aircraft Carriers In Order To Handle The New Stealth Fighter Jets

October 14, 2016

The Italian Navy is in an all out effort to prepare for the all-weather, 5th generation, stealth multi-role, advanced fighter F-35 Lightning II.  Italy is both a funding and development partner and is heavily invested in the project. Since the aircraft carrier is the backbone of modern naval aviation it needs to be able to handle the more advanced stealth fighter.

Naval aviation is typically projected to a position nearer the target by way of an aircraft carrier. Aircraft carriers must be able to handle launching in a short distance and be sturdy and flexible enough to come to handle sudden stops on a pitching flight deck. Typically, they have robust mechanisms that allow higher numbers of aircraft to be stored in below-decks hangars and small spaces on flight decks. That’s the challenge to modern aircraft carriers. This video documents these efforts.
