On Thursday, President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, told reporters that he has made a commitment to stop swearing after he claims God told him to. The revelation comes just a week after Duterte called President Obama a “son of a whore” and that he had enough of America’s “bullshit” before announcing his country’s separation from the states.
During a flight back from Japan on Thursday night, Duterte says he was enjoying the view of the skys and enduring the sounds of the snoozing passengers around him before he heard a voice disturb the peace as it chimed in with a demand.
“If you don’t stop epithets, I will bring this plane down now,” the voice reportedly said to Duterte.
“And I said, ‘Who is this?’ So, of course, ‘it’s God,’” he told journalists after the flight.
“So, I promise God,” he continued, “Not [to] express slang, cuss words and everything. So you guys hear me right always because [a] promise to God is a promise to the Filipino people.”
However, Duterte offered himself an out for future offenses adding that “there’s always a time for everything, a time to be foul-mouthed.”
Duterte has had a history of aggressive behavior and has been known to violently curse in the past. On top of cursing out the Pope for clogging traffic last year, Duterte was once nicknamed “the Death Squad Mayor” as he ordered criminals with drug offenses to be killed as they were not “human.” Thousands have been killed by the Government as a result of Duterte’s “war on drugs,” which he encouraged by telling police officers they would not be punished for killing these criminals.
“Crime against humanity? In the first place, I’d like to be frank with you: Are they humans? What is your definition of a human being?” he said when questioned about the ethics of such a campaign back in August.
