Internet investigators have unearthed forum posts from the social media website Reddit which are believed to have been posted by one of Clinton’s email staffers. The Clinton employee took to the site to ask questions related to the now infamous email scandal. It is believed the username who posted the question, “stonetear”, is that of Paul Combetta, the Clinton aide who wiped Clinton’s controversial server and gained FBI immunity. The “stonetear” user deleted the posts but they were able to be recovered through an archive.
With the subject “Remove or replace to/from address on archived emails?” the “stonetear” made the following post:
“Hello all- I may be facing a very interesting situation where I need to strip out a VIP’s (VERY VIP) email address from a bunch of archived email that I have both in a live Exchange mailbox, as well as a PST file. Basically, they don’t want the VIP’s email address exposed to anyone, and want to be able to either strip out or replace the email address in the to/from fields in all of the emails we want to send out.
I am not sure if something like this is possible with PowerShell, or exporting all of the emails to MSG and doing find/replaces with a batch processing program of some sort.
Does anyone have experience with something like this, and/or suggestions on how this might be accomplished?”
In response to a user trying to assist with the problem solving, Combetta states “the issue is that these emails involve the private email address of someone you’d recognize, and we’re trying to replace it with a placeholder address as to not expose it.”
The stonetear username made multiple posts that fall into place with the email server timeline. The above post was made on July 24, 2014, which was the day after Congressman Trey Gowdy’s committee confirmed a deal to obtain Clinton’s email records.
The FBI investigation exposed emails that showed Clinton’s aide Cheryl Mills asking, in December 2014, for someone to implement a function for her email system that would delete messages after 60 days. In the same month, “stonetear” posted this to Reddit:
“I have a client who wants to push out a 60 day email retention policy for certain users. However, they also want these users to have a ‘Save Folder’ in their Exchange folder… All email in any other folder in the mailbox should purge anything older than 60 days… How would I go about this?”
Though the suspicion that “stonetear” on Reddit is in fact Combetta has not been confirmed, users note that an etsy account with someone named Paul Combetta has the username “stonetear”, and that the email [email protected], uses the name Paul Combetta and was used to register “Combetta.com”.
