Ernest “Ernie” M. Phillips is a WWII veteran and survivor of the torpedo attack that ultimately sunk the USS Northampton. This grizzly veteran recounts the tale like it happened just yesterday. From being blown clear off the ship by the impact of the missiles, to his shipmates mistakenly spraying oil infused water onto the flames, to swimming to a nearby island and being rescued by natives and semaphoring another sailor to pick him up from the island.
Phillips told his story on “Legacies – Stories of the Second World War” which was aired on WINT 1330 AM. Luckily, his whole story can be heard in the AudioBurst below!
