For the week of August 12-18, TSA agents set a record after finding 81 guns in traveler’s carry-on bags. Of the 81 guns, 70 of them were loaded and 31 of them had a round in the chamber.

The previous record for most guns discovered by TSA agents in a week was only the week before (August 5-11). There were 78 guns discovered in that week.

The total number of firearms seized by TSA agents so far is 1,908. Last year, there were 2,653 guns seized by TSA agents, which was a 20% increase from 2014. This year, TSA agents are on pace to seize more guns than last year.

“In addition to all of the other prohibited items we find weekly in carry-on bags, our officers also regularly find firearm components, realistic replica firearms, bb and pellet guns, airsoft guns, brass knuckles, ammunition, batons, stun guns, small pocketknives and many other prohibited items too numerous to note,” TSA wrote in the blog.

Many of the firearms that were confiscated were .380’s and 9mm’s.

“People typically say they just forgot it was there,” TSA spokesman Michael England told The Trace.
