Just two weeks ago, officer Justin Scherlen of the Amarillo Police Department died due to complications from an on-duty vehicle crash.
For the first time ever, the family would not have a father to take them to school on the first day of school. He is survived by his his wife Jessica and their children.
A large group of Amarillo police officers, described by the school as “an army of stand-ins” surprised the slain fathers children by escorting them to school. Afterwards, they lined up to give out hugs.
The moment that his son Jackson gave hugs to all of the police officers in attendance was caught on video by the Amarillo Independent School District.
“I’d give it all back just to have Justin here with his son,” Officer Daniel Smith told KVII. “At least we can be here for him and let Jackson know that he always has someone to call on.”
After losing his police officer dad, he has an army of stand-ins for this important first. #firstdayofschool2016 pic.twitter.com/BwtRMRuNmf
