Strap on your seatbelt and grab your barf bag because you’re about to be taken on the most intense flight of your life!
An HD camera is attached to the outside of a MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jet as it takes us to the outer stratosphere. During this insane “near-space” flight the aircraft reaches speeds of over 630 mph and reaches altitudes of over 50,000 feet.
The weather conditions on this day were rather warm at more than 15° C, which causes the jet to not accelerate as high as it would ideally. Edge of Space flights are best in winter when the air is cold. An 20-22km altitude is very possible with the right conditions, though at least 17km is certain.
This twin-engine jet fighter aircraft reaches altitudes that are high enough to see the curvature of the earth. At around the 12:40 mark, smoke trails created by this mind-blowing flight are visible. The Earth below looks like it is covered in a bluish fog and the sky above becomes almost black with trillions of stars. No one, with the exception of “astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the ISS will fly higher at this point,” according to MigFlug.
You don’t have to be a service member, pilot, or even an astronaut to experience the edge of space! MigFlug allows you to enter the aircraft and even take control of the jet as you soar above the earth. Sit behind the controls as you experience vertical dives, supersonic speeds, tail-slides and curves like a real fighter pilot. It’s only € 17’500 for a 50-minute flight and flights take off in Russia. Few have yet enjoyed this experience.
The MiG-29 is able to reach that unbelievable “flight altitude at supersonic speed and at a climb rate up to 330m/s – in a ballistic flight path and is the only aircraft for supersonic flying with civilians,” MigFlug stated.
The MiG-29 Edge of Space flight experience includes you being able to control the jet. As stated on the MigFlug website, you will be guaranteed to experience the following maneuvers during Edge of Space flight program:
- Breaking the Sound Barrier and fly at supersonic speed
- Climb to the max altitude at nearly Mach 2
- Accelerated vertical climbing
- Vertical dive
