The Normandy Landings and the Battle at Normandy were under military operations Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord which were aimed to liberate western Europe from Nazi control.
This graphic from The Sitrep shows just how large the invasion was and the massive undertaking it took to beat back the German forces.
The Normandy invasions spanned 5 separate beaches, including Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beach.
Let us never forget the brave men that died on D-Day, which includes the more than 10,000 casualties suffered from the Allied forces.
