Dozens of House Democrats are staging a “sit-in” to “occupy” the U.S. House of Representatives floor in Congress until, they say, they are allowed a vote on a gun control bill.
Democrats have been trying to pass gun-control legislation using Orlando terrorist attack as the tool to chip away at the Second Amendment. Democrats have been saying that terrorism isn’t the problem but that gun control is.
The sit-in is organized by Rep. John Lewis from Georgia and they walked into the House Chamber and said they will be “occupying” the House floor until the GOP allows the vote.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) chimed in with “Break the shackles!”
Democrats have been trying to pass a bill that would ban people from buying guns who are on the federal “no-fly” list. However, people who are on the no-fly list are just put there by the federal government with no due process. In effect, the government will be taking away the Second Amendment rights of people with no due process.
This could very well lead to an abuse of the no-fly list to arbitrarily ban people, fair or not, from a Constitutional right.
The Democrats are using the hashtag #NoBillNoBreak, which is now trending on Twitter meaning that they will sit in and disrupt the Congressional recess that is coming up.
GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan, responded exactly how Democrats expected him to by not trying to defeat the logic of arbitrarily taking away people’s Second Amendment rights but by whining about procedural logistics.
AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), said in a statement. “The House cannot operate without members following the rules of the institution, so the House has recessed subject to the call of the chair.”
Paul Ryan also had cut C-SPAN cameras when the sit-in first occurred but in the age of modern technology that will hardly do anything.
We will keep you updated as the sit-in progresses.
