Conan O’Brien is a comedian.
He’s good at his job and makes millions of dollars a year for it. He is an entertainer to make people laugh as they get ready for bed. He says his job is to be funny and silly.
So when on Monday night he got on tv for his nightly show and said he makes it a policy to never comment on this type of stuff, said he’s a father of two and said that he does not understand “why anyone in America is allowed to purchase and own a semi-automatic assault rifle” it is quite possibly, the most dangerous and ignorant statement made by any “celebrity” in America on gun rights and the Constitution’s Second Amendment.
It’s the most ignorant because of the platform, the rarity of this type of statement from him and the complete ignorance of what weapons our military uses compared to what civilians have access to. It’s not just the words that make it ignorant it’s the declarative nature of his stance, yet the complete lack of knowledge on the issue, the weapons, the historical context of the Second Amendment and the lack of terrorism context.

To not understand why the founding fathers of our nation made owning guns the second most important element of American civilization, after free speech, is shocking, dangerous and unbecoming of a high school student – let alone someone of his profile.
He says “these are weapons of war and they have no place in civilian life. He’s wrong – it’s the only reason we have an American civilian life and that we are free from tyranny and it is why we have more free speech and individual liberty than any other nation on the planet.
Our U.S. military uses rifles such as the M-16 and the M4. These look like an AR-15 but have completely different functionality. The M-16 and M4 provide fully automatic fire and multi-round burst fire. These capabilities is not available on the AR-15. The AR-15 is just like any other standard gun – not a military rifle.
A semi-automatic rifle is any rifle that allows for one pull of the trigger and one bullet fired.
He’s also wrong because the military uses automatic rifles, not semi-automatic.
He doesn’t even know the basic facts and makes the classic mistake of using the false terms of “assault rifle” and “semi-automatic” seemingly meaning something else.
Conan O’Brien is a national embarrassment on such an ignorant level that it makes you question if he ever went to high school or even knows anything about this nation, its military, the way the nation was formed or what the Second Amendment is even for.
Conan calls for the nation to “grow up and figure this out.” He joins a growing list of people that need to get an education about radical Islam and the war being waged on America, the statistics of gun ownership and realize the problem isn’t guns, it’s religious tyranny that has been going on for thousands of years.
