The fight involves 20,000 Iraqi troops. Of the 20,000 troops, 10,000 are Iraqi Army, Federal Police and Golden Division. The other 10,000 are Popular Mobilization Unit fighters. Of the 10,000 PMU fighters, half are Sunni tribal fighters from Anbar and the other half are Shia volunteers from Iraq.
The Iraqi military has been pounding the city with airstrikes since Sunday and intend to soon send in ground troops once they clear any traps set out for them. Re-capturing the city is one of the Iraqi military’s top priorities as it will deal a huge blow to ISIS.
