In another gun-control effort to bring more regulations to gun dealerships, Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly, a former astronaut, announced the creation of the “Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition.”

The coalition was formed in an effort to stop gun violence and it is trying to get support for the Gun Dealer Licensing Act from state leaders. The proposal’s aim is to require background checks for gun dealer employees, require inspections from state employees to keep track of potential missing firearms in dealers inventories to make sure that the dealerships are held accountable for their missing firearms, and to give training to employees that will help them identify straw purchases.
In a statement, Illinois Senate President said, “We’ve been working on these issues for years, and the key thing I’ve learned is this: somewhere in the stream of commerce between a gun manufacturer and a crime scene there is someone purporting to be a law-abiding gun owner, buyer or seller who is anything but.”
Mark Kelly, in an opinion piece written for Time, wrote that current gun laws in The United States make the country vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson said in a statement that “the fact that Kelly and spouse are here to muscle Illinois gun owners is an insult to every citizen of the state.”
Kelly and Giffords have praised President Obama for making a larger effort towards introducing smart gun technology and bringing together multiple state and local officials that are in favor of more gun control.
