Barb Moles was home with her husband and son Thursday night when an unknown man entered their home. Police believe that the 25-year-old intruder, Steven Sheppard, intended to burglarize the home. Barb entered her kitchen to find her husband bleeding on the floor. He summoned the strength to tell Barb he had been attacked with a crowbar. She quickly went down the hall to retrieve the family’s .38 caliber handgun.
As Barb re-entered the hallway she encountered the home intruder. He was able to utter a single word, “gun”. Barb fired four shots at Sheppard, striking him three times. She told the local news station KOMO News:
“Never in my whole life did i ever anticipate having to take another life, especially at age 80. Give me a break here.”
Barb’s husband spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit of their local hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. The shooting is under investigation and local authorities are unsure whether or not charges will be filed against the Moles family. Despite the looming possibility of legal action Barb states that she would not hesitate to make make the decision to shoot an intruder again if given the opportunity. She is remorseful for the shooting but states that the safety of herself and her family comes first.
