Military men sometimes show a side of themselves that isn’t usually seen. This is the case for these men when spending time at a tea party with their daughters. While brainstorming ideas on how to capture April as the month to celebrate children of the military, photographer Vanessa Hicks came up with the idea of military parents spending time with their children in something that she calls “Military Tea Time.”

She got the idea when she said “I looked at my daughters playing dress-up in their rooms and the idea came to me,” Hicks told ABC News. “I thought it’d be awesome to have the kids having a tea time with the one person they look up to the most. Military members are our nation’s heroes, but at the end of the day, to these little kids, that’s just their hero, their mom or dad.”
The first “military tea time” that Hicks put together was between her own husband, Lt. Navy Officer Josh Hicks and their daughters. The date consists of about a 30 minute photo session where the father and daughters talk about anything they want while eating snacks and water in place of tea.
“I take pictures behind the dads’ shoulders to capture the girls’ faces and if the dads are seeing what I’m seeing, they see their daughters’ face light up,” Hicks said.
At first, the idea of having a tea party seems strange for the fathers, but they seem to come around once they see how much their daughters enjoy it.
