Posting signs out in front of your house to give burglars pause are some of the most common ways people thwart crime. “Beware of Dog” or “This home is armed with [insert home security system here]” but one Indianapolis family has taken that to a new level, and one thief was too dumb to read it.

The attempted burglary happened just after noon on a quiet residential neighborhood on the 3200 block of West Banta Road. Inside the home were a mother, her infant child, and her sister.
According to the woman’s father, Edsel Ballard:
“She heard the window get busted and she called her husband and said I think somebody’s breaking in the house.”
Her brother Eddie continued:
“He broke in through the baby’s window, ok, and when he was coming out the door, my sister was coming out her bedroom door, he aimed and shot at her first and then she shot him.”
What was most concerning was that the criminal, who ended up being shot several times and later transferred to a local hospital was carrying walkie talkies and zip ties. By the grace of God, the child was not injured.
The craziest part about this whole situation however, may be the sign that hung above this family’s door.
Yup, that’s a massive gun with the words “We Don’t Dial 911.” It’s unclear if this robber had any past associations with the family, however it doesn’t appear he did – meaning his neglecting to read such an obvious sign has earned him a spot on the world’s dumbest criminals list.
IMPD Southwest District Commander Mike Spears had this to say about the incident:
“This shooting is very unusual in this area of our district. When we have an incident like this as we do throughout the city, involving the use of a firearm, it’s something we take very personally and we want to get in front of and investigate aggressively.”
