The Metal Storm took the world by, well, storm, in the 90s. The fastest gun on earth could only shoot about 6,000 rounds a minute but Metal Storm technology was changing all that.
What makes it so much faster than the previous fastest gun, the M134 Minigun, is the method in which it shoots its projectiles. The bullets are loaded in nose to tail and are fired using an electronic current – one after the other.
It produces a wave of bullets that can total 16,000 in 60 seconds! In 2007, Metal Storm began sending some of these to the Navy.
However the company has gone through several iterations and the technology hasn’t caught on as a result. We’ll see what the future holds for this gun that one Lockheed weapons designer said will, “F your day up!”
