Al-Jazeera’s digital media wing called AJ+ released a video for July 4th which has many here in the states feeling extremely offended. The company is owned by the government of Qatar, a country with a staggeringly poor record of human rights.
The video is called “Americans Show Why USA Is The #1 Country In The World” and featured people acting like stereotyped caricatures of Americans stating unflattering quips about American habits.
From obesity to guns to drugs, the video is made to make American look like fools.
AJ+’s executive producer David Cohen replied to one YouTube user who said she’d be unsubscribing from them after feeling offended: “Sorry to hear that. You should keep in mind the spirit of this video is not necessarily ‘liberal’ or ‘conservative.’ It’s both meant to be a bit of fun (light humor) as well as criticism. But criticism of our country isn’t a bad thing. In fact, you can argue it’s patriotic. Hope all is well.”
