Most American colonists were loyal to England until the 1770’s but when, as most Americans know, King George subjected its subjects to increased meddling in America’s affairs it led to a five man committee to draft the most important document the world has ever known after the Bible, the Declaration of Independence.

This outlined the desire for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. On July 4th, 1776 the Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.

The first July 4th celebration was actually on July 8th, 1776 when the Declaration was read aloud in public in Philadelphia.
