Hundreds of illegal immigrants met outside New York City’s City Hall on Tuesday to pressure the city to provide additional taxpayer-funded support and work authorization for illegal immigrants as lawmakers held a hearing on the “experiences of Black migrants in New York City.”

According to The New York Post, roughly 1,300 African migrants gathered outside New York City’s City Hall on Tuesday during a joint session of the City Council’s Committee of Immigration and Committee on Hospitals that was intended to help lawmakers understand the experience of African illegal immigrants in the city’s shelter system.

While only 250 people were allowed to enter the building for the hearing at 10 a.m., hundreds of other illegal immigrants gathered downtown in the park to push for more taxpayer-funded resources. One source told The New York Post that the crowd largely consisted of illegal immigrants from West Africa and that the crowd had been encouraged to meet outside City Hall by an activist organization.

According to the New York Post, some of the illegal immigrants gathered outside City Hall claimed they were promised green cards or work visas if they came to Tuesday’s hearing.

In a press release obtained by The New York Post, the New York City Council explained that Tuesday’s hearing was expected to feature testimony on the experiences of African illegal immigrants in the city’s shelters to “understand how the [Adams] Administration is addressing language access barriers, cultural competency challenges, health needs, and other roadblocks” that illegal immigrants face in the city.

Savanah Hernandez, a Frontlines contributor, shared a video on Tuesday, featuring hundreds of the illegal immigrants who were gathered outside City Hall.

“Hundreds of illegals immigrants from Haiti and Africa are currently in front of City Hall in New York. The majority are single men and mainly French speaking,” Hernandez tweeted. “They told me they are here to ask the city for more assistance and the ability to work.”

Hernandez also shared another video on X, formerly Twitter, of illegal immigrants waving the Guinea flag outside City Hall. She explained that the illegal immigrants had gathered outside City Hall after entering the United States and traveling to New York City, where she said they will “receive free housing, food and medical care all at the taxpayers expense.”
