A gas explosion rocked Madrid, Spain on Wednesday, killing four people and injuring 11 more.

The explosion took place in a residential building where maintenance was being conducted to a gas boiler, according to The Associated Press.

Video on social media shows smoke plumes filling the sky and debris strewn across the city streets.

Law enforcement told citizens to avoid the area of Puerto de Toledo, where the incident took place, according to Express.

Citizens in nearby buildings — which included a nursing home and a school — were evacuated as crews worked to extinguish the flames of the blast.

Spain’s National Police agency later released a drone video showing the building’s entire facade ripped off from the blast.

The agency added that 120 specialized police agents were deployed to the scene.

The building is owned by a local Catholic parish, and houses offices and residences for its priests.

The National Police agency said that emergency calls reporting the explosion came in just before 3:00 p.m. local time, and evacuation of the building was completed 30 minutes later.

The explosion comes just one year after a Jan. 14, 2020 chemical plant explosion killed one and injured nine in northeastern Spain just outside of Barcelona, the Associated Press reported.
