102 shot, 14 fatally including toddler in Chicago over Father’s Day weekend

A 3-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were among the youngest fatal victims of a deadly Father’s Day weekend in Chicago, Ill.

In total, 14 people were shot and killed between Friday evening and Monday morning in Chicago, The Chicago Sun-Times reported. Another 92 people were shot and injured over the weekend, making a total of 102 shootings in the city.

Five of those killed over the weekend were minors.

A 3-year-old boy, identified as Mekay James, was killed Saturday evening in the Austin community area of Chicago. The boy was riding in an SUV with his 27-year-old father when a blue Honda pulled behind their vehicle at about 6:25 p.m. and fired several rounds, striking the child. The father drove the child to the West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, but the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Police believe the father was the intended target of the shooting. He was treated for a graze wound to the abdomen.

The 13-year-old girl, identified as Amaria J. Jones, was killed and two other teens were wounded Saturday night in a shooting also in the Austin community. Jones was inside a home around the 1000 block of North LeClaire Avenue at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. She was struck in the neck and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Jasean Francis, 17, and another 16-year-old boy were also among the minors killed on Saturday. A male suspect approached the two near the 7900 block of South Luella Avenue at around 5:10 p.m. and opened fire. Francis was struck in the back, chest, and hand, and the other boy was struck in the back and side.

Both boys were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The last fatal incident involving a minor victim occurred near the 4700 block of West Superior Street, at around 12:18 a.m. Monday morning. The victim, a 15-year-old boy was struck in the leg, chest, and abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital before he was pronounced dead. Another 16-year-old boy was also struck in the ankle in the shooting and was listed in fair condition.

The last fatal victim of the weekend overall was a 41-year-old man who was fatally shot around 4:26 a.m. Monday morning. The man was shot in the face and taken to Stroger Hospital where he died about an hour after the shooting. A suspect was taken into custody and identified by witnesses as the suspected shooter.

Minutes earlier, at around 4:18 a.m. another 30-year-old man was shot in the neck and died later at Stroger Hospital.

NBC 5 Chicago compiled a list of just some of the shootings that occurred over the weekend, however, details of the remaining weekend shooting incidents were not available.

The weekend violence exceeded that of the violence seen in the city the previous weekend, in which 37 people were shot, and three were killed.

The deadliest single day in Chicago in 60 years occurred on Sunday, May 31 as 18 residents were killed in a single day. 25 people in total were killed that same weekend and another 85 were injured by gunfire.
