A military veteran took heroic actions when he tackled an armed man who had threatened to shoot others following a fight early Saturday in Kalamazoo, police said.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers said they responded to the 2700 block of West Michigan Avenue just after 2 a.m Saturday, Dec. 14 on a report of a man who flashed a gun.

Officers arrived to find a man holding another man on the ground.

Witnesses told police that a man was flashing a gun during a fight. The veteran told police he heard the man say he was going to “shoot everybody.”

That’s when the veteran took action, police said.

“As the suspect ran toward the crowd, the military veteran disregarded his own safety and tackled the suspect, holding him until police arrived,” police wrote in a statement.

Police found a loaded handgun on the tackled man.

They arrested the person with the gun, a 32-year-old Milford, Ohio man, on multiple felony charges.
