A Westbrook, Maine native was fatally shot late Friday night when he tried to stop an armed robbery at a gas station in Arkansas.

Two suspects armed with handguns entered the Valero Big Red gas station on West Broadway in North Little Rock about 11:38 p.m. in an attempted armed robbery, according to the North Little Rock Police Department.

The suspects fatally shot a customer before fleeing the scene, police said.

That customer was identified as Shawn McKeough, 23, a senior airman in the U.S. Air Force and a Westbrook native, according to ABC affiliate KATV. McKeough had attempted to stop the robbery when he was shot.

McKeough was assigned to the 19th Logistics Readiness Squadron in North Little Rock, according to the U.S. Air Force.

“We are heartbroken to have lost a valued member of our Team Little Rock family,” Col. Gerald Donohue, 19 Airlift Wing commander, said in a statement. “Shawn’s death will be felt by each of us, and we are committed to supporting his loved ones and fellow Airmen during this very difficult time.”

North Little Rock police have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
