As the migrant caravan from Honduras closes in on the Mexico-Guatemalan border on their trek to the United States, they will face their next big barrier – the Mexican federal police.

Mexico heeded President Trump’s call for blocking the caravan by sending their own federal forces to the border on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the caravan’s arrival, USA Today reported. Two Boeing 727 planes carrying Mexico’s federal police officers landed in the border city of Tapachula, as visible in the video blelow.

Video and reports revealed hundreds of officers unloading from the planes, some of which were equipped with riot gear.

President Trump tweeted a response saying, “Thank you Mexico, we look forward to working with you!”

President Trump called on Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala to put a stop to the caravan or he would halt federal funding to those nations. On Thursday, he warned Mexico that he could cancel the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal if they failed to halt the caravan at their southern border, The Washington Times reported.

President Trump also said he was considering deploying the U.S. military to the border if the other nations failed to stop the caravan, which has swelled to an estimated 4,000 migrants.

“In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught – and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!” he said in a tweet.

“The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as president, than trade or the USMCA. Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught,” he tweeted again.

Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement, “Any person wishing to enter national territory must do so by complying with the requirements established in the Migration Law and at the authorized entry points, and may then move freely in Mexico until the expiration of the visa.”

“Current legislation does not permit entry into Mexico if requirements to travel to a neighboring country have not been met,” the statement added.

Mexico’s Interior and Foreign Relations ministries released a joint statement warning that migrants without immigration documentation would be arrested and “returned to their country of origin.”

Mexico Foreign Affairs Secretary Luis Videgaray traveled to New York this week to meet personally with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and plea for help in processing migrants in the caravan who may qualify for refugee status.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will fly to Mexico City on Friday to meet with Mexican officials, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, as well as president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to discuss the caravan and other issues such as immigration.
