One of the finest-made and smooth-shooting handguns I own is the Star BM9. It is also a budget 9mm pistol that shares many of the same qualities as a full size (and very expensive) Browning Hi Power. It’s all-steel frame, single action trigger, thumb safety position, field strip and overall look of the gun resembles a Hi Power sub-compact. Best of all, it’s selling for $229.

The Star BM9 is a Spanish-made surplus pistol that was used for law enforcement and the military. Due to Spain’s gun laws, the BM9 was never in the hands of civilians until they were imported to the U.S. Now we have the ability to get a budget friendly sub-compact pistol for an incredible price.

The Star BM9 featured in the video was made in 1972. It has a short five-pound trigger pull with an eight-round magazine. It has a commander style 1911 look and feel along with a 4-inch linked barrel, and it locks up nice and tight. Seldom are budget-priced handguns of this quality. Many gun enthusiasts rave about the full size Browning Hi Power as one of the finest shooting pistols ever created. The Star BM9 handles and shoots just as nice while in a smaller package.

At the range, the Star BM9 shoots like a high-end handgun. It fed, fired and ejected every round I loaded, including Hornady Critical Defense 9mm self defense loads. The 1911-like single action trigger is so light and smooth; it makes an average shooter feel like a professional.

For those looking for an all-steel frame, quality made pistol for a budget price, the Star BM9 is a worthy choice. Watch the range review video below and let us know your experiences with the Star BM9 and if you are interested in this solid firearm for a budget price.
