Hawaii mistakenly sends ‘ballistic missile inbound’ alert to residents

Hawaii residents mistakenly received a ballistic missile emergency alert on Saturday.

“BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII,” read the alert. “SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

Hawaii residents immediately took to Twitter and posted about the alert.

It was not long after that the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management posted on Twitter that the alert was an error.

“State Warning Point has issued a Missile Alert in ERROR,” tweeted Oahu Emergency Management. “There is NO threat to the state of Hawaii!”

And, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeted: “NO missile threat to Hawaii.”

Details about how the alert was sent out in error were not immediately available.
