Hosts on Airbnb are currently renting out a former nuclear missile silo that was used during the Cold War and has since been converted into a mansion.

The Subterra Castle was formerly home to an Atlas E rocket with a nuclear warhead.
Ed and Dianna Peden bought the property, located in Eskridge, Kansas – about 15 miles southwest of Topeka, in 1994 and converted it into a mansion.

Neighbor Matthew Fulkerson came up with the idea to turn the mansion into a popular Airbnb spot, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported.
Fulkerson said the Subterra Castle site, built in 1959, was one of nine missile silos that formed a ring around Topeka, Kansas.
The underground Air Force base housed “an intercontinental ballistic missile that had a nuclear warhead 32 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima,” Fulkerson said.

Fulkerson said he and the Pedens “are considering using both apartments upstairs and down,” should Airbnb traffic pick up, “especially because some people really want the experience of sleeping underground.”

The silo, listed for $140 per night, has more than 18,000 square feet of underground space with a pond, a grass airstrip and castle towers.
