ISIS claims responsibility for London Underground ‘bucket bomb’ terror attack

September 15, 2017

A unit affiliated with ISIS is reportedly responsible for the IED terror attack on a London Underground train on Friday that injured 22 people, ISIS has claimed on its propaganda site.

The Independent is reporting that while experts are urging “caution” over the claim, a message on the ISIS propaganda page Amaq said: “A security source to Amaq: The bombing of the IED in the London tube was carried out by a unit affiliated to the Islamic State,” as translated by Middle East observer Hassan Hassan.

The Independent also reported:

Shiraz Maher, an expert on radicalisation at Kings College London, said it was unusual for such announcements to be made while the suspect was still at large.

He said the declaration was a “break from the norm” and was “significant”.

Others said it was a sign of desperation.

London authorities declared the incident a terror attack on the London Underground, at the Parsons Green train station, around 8:20 a.m. local time Friday morning, after a homemade “bucket bomb” partially exploded on a train car.

Authorities have now said the bucket bomb failed to detonate properly, otherwise it might have resulted in dozens of deaths.

Between the improvised explosive device (IED) and the resulting stampede of people trying to escape the train station, at least 22 people are injured.

London’s Metropolitan Police and Scotland Yard are investigating the incident and searching for a suspect or suspects.

According to The Sun, “the homemade device connected to a timer sent a ‘fireball down a carriage’ as it detonated with a schoolboy and pregnant woman among those injured in the rush-hour terror explosion.”

There is reportedly a manhunt underway and people are being treated for their injuries.
