One Killed & One Injured In F-16 Crash At New Mexico Air Force Base

February 02, 2017

One person was killed and another injured during a training accident at Holloman Air Force Base. Two members of a ground-control party were struck as two F-16 jets used unspecified air-to-ground munitions at a range that’s part of the White Sands Missile Range complex near Holloman.

A civilian contractor was killed and an airman was treated for injuries before being released. Capt. Bryant Davis, chief of public affairs for the 49th Wing at Holloman, has confirmed that the two men were part of the ground-control party that was helping to coordinate the live-fire drill at Red Rio range, which is in the White Sands Missile Range complex.

The two F-16s involved in the incident are based at Holloman but belong to a group that is part of a wing headquartered at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. The two men involved on the ground were medically evacuated to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center. Both pilots were uninjured.

The identities of the contractor and airman have not been released. The accident is still under investigation.
