Watch How Paratroopers Trained During World War II

December 16, 2016

Check out this video on the rigorous training paratroopers underwent in order to perfect a drop and landing.

Many top U.S. Army commanders were originally opposed to the idea of airborne units, but after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt pushed for the idea, Major General William C. Lee organized the first paratroop platoon.

This prompted the Provisional Parachute Group, and after that the United States Airborne Command.

General Lee then became the first commander at the new parachute school at Fort Benning, in west-central Georgia.

The men that became paratroopers were entering a relatively new field as the first US airborne unit began as a test platoon formed from part of the 29th Infantry Regiment, in July 1940.
