Virginia Beach Car Dealership Added To Navy’s List Of Off Limits Businesses For Bird-Dogging

November 23, 2016

The Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board for Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina has added a car dealership in Virginia Beach, U.S. Auto Excellence, to their list of off limits businesses for Sailors. The dealership was added to the list for participating in the act of “Bird-Dogging.”

Bird-Dogging is an unfair and illegal business practice where an individual refers a potential customer to a business in exchange for a a fee or other form of compensation. This act is illegal because Virginia law restricts car sales to salespeople who are licensed to dealerships.

The business will remain off limits to Sailors until the next meeting of The Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board for Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, at which point the board will determine whether or not the ban will continue.

Businesses that participate in Bird-Dogging have been accused of preying on young, recently enlisted, service members in order to coerce them into making rash decisions or “impulse buys” that drain their bank accounts of any recently acquired signing bonuses.
