A 62-year-old Philadelphia man was injured at approximately 4:00 am on Tuesday morning when a bomb, placed in a manilla envelope that was delivered to his home, detonated in his hands. The victim, who has not been identified for privacy and security concerns, was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for treatment. He remains in stable condition.
The man opened the bomb believing it was an inhaler or other medication that is delivered to his home. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are working with U.S. Postal Inspectors and the Philadelphia city bomb squad to determine why the man was targeted. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters that the bomb was “target specific.” At this time it is unclear whether the police have a suspect for the crime.
Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said that there where no threats to the victim before or after the incident. Neighbors of the man claim to have not heard any explosions, despite the explosion reportedly taking place in the man’s kitchen.
