During a speech to law enforcement officials on Monday, Philippine President Duterte vowed to “forget about human rights” if militants from the Islamic State came to his country as a safe haven after fleeing from the Middle East. Duterte, concerned of the threat of ISIS setting up territory in his nation, said that if they decided to come to the Philippines after being pushed out of Iraq and Syria, that he would be obligated to keep the Philippine people safe and therefore would not care whether or not he had to take extreme measures to do so.
“Once the terrorists of the Middle East are deprived of the land area, the real estate area where they can sleep… They will wander to other places and they will come here and we have to prepare for that,” Duterte said.
“Remember, these guys, they do not have an iota of what is human rights, believe me. I will not just simply allow my people to be slaughtered for the sake of human rights; that’s bullshit,” he continued.
Duterte suggested that the southern region of the Philippines was already being overrun by Islamic extremists who post a threat of “looming terrorism.” In August, Duterte commented on negotiating with the extremists who had already stationed there and said “some parts of the islands of Mindanao, there are white people. I suppose they are Arabs, and they are here as missionaries…They are here for indoctrination. That’s what I’m afraid of.”
Promising to deploy troops to the southern region, Duterte said “We have problems with Muslim insurgency, and we have to address them before they get contaminated by the ISIS disease.”
Duterte has been a very outspoken leader when it comes to ignoring rights for the sake of greater security. Duterte’s war on drugs has seen a slew of deaths because of his no nonsense stance on combatting drug lords in his country. In September, Duterte spoke about combatting the drug problem and said “Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now, there are 3 million drug addicts… I’d be happy to slaughter them.”
