September 21, 2016

Violent protests broke out overnight in Charlotte, North Carolina over a deadly police shooting. Multiple protesters as well as 16 police officers have been injured in the protest.

On Tuesday, a police officer fatally shot a black man, Keith Lamont Scott, while trying to serve a warrant to a different man at an apartment complex. Police said that Scott was carrying a gun. His family said that he was carrying a book after he exited his vehicle, waiting for his son to be dropped off from school.

Chief Putney says that no book was recovered at the scene, but a handgun was. He added that it was unclear if a gun was pointed at the officer.

The mayor’s office said that the officer who shot Scott is Brently Vinson, who is also black. Since the incident, he has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Hundreds of people gathered outside of the apartment complex with several people holding signs that read “Black Lives Matter.”

One police officer was run over by a vehicle that was driven by one of the Black Lives Matter.

Several of the protesters were seen throwing rocks and bottles at police officers. The police department tweeted out that 12 officers were injured at that one of them was hit in the face with a rock.

Police officers were seen in riot gear firing tear gas into the street to quell the riot.

Early Wednesday morning, a group of protesters blocked off Interstate 85 and a fire was started in the middle of it.
