Learn About Marine One: The Government’s Alternative To Air Force One

Many people are familiar with Air Force One, the official air traffic control call sign for a United States Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States of America. However, most people aren’t familiar with Marine One, The United States Marine Corps call sign for aircraft carrying the commander-in-chief.

The handle usually refers to a helicopter operated by Marine Helicopter Squadron One, also known as the “Nighthawks”. Marine One is typically a large VH-3D Sea King or the newer, smaller VH-60N “WhiteHawk”.

Marine One was first used in 1957, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower began traveling aboard a Bell UH-13J Sioux to either the White House or his summer home in Pennsylvania. Marine Force One is typically used when a sufficient runway for Air Force One is not available.
