There was no immediate claim of direct responsibility for the attack by the two gunmen in the Sarona Market in Tel Aviv, which is only a few hundred yards from Israel’s defense ministry. The two men are believed to be cousins from the village of Yatta in Palestine located in the West Bank. They posed as two customers at a restaurant before opening fire.

The two men were apprehended and one of them was wounded. Security experts say that they entered Israel without permits.

The Sunni-Islamic group Hamas praised the attacks. Two men and two women were killed in the attacks. Sixteen more people were injured.

In a statement, the Palestinian presidency said it “repeatedly emphasized its rejection of all operations targeting civilians regardless of their identity and irrespective of the justifications.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the market shortly after the attacks and said,”We held a discussion on a string of offensive and defensive measures that we will take to act against this phenomenon.”

Parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip celebrated the attacks by setting off fireworks, cheering and waving flags.

Israel later announced the suspension of 83,000 entry permits issued to Palestinians in the West Bank who planned to visit Israel during Ramadan.

The army announced that it will be sending two 300 troop battalions to the West Bank to reinforce the troops that are already stationed there.
