(WATCH) Firefighter Undergoes Most Extensive Face Transplant Ever, Gives Hope To Thousands

November 17, 2015

Volunteer firefighter Patrick Hardison’s life changed forever when he stormed a burning building that collapsed on him, melting his face mask to his face and leaving him horribly burned and disfigured.

That is until the medical team at NYU turned his whole life around, executing the most extensive face transplant in history.

This required clearing his face to the bone of all tissue, and using a face that a deceased man of similar build and skin color donated to science. Hardison was told his chance for survival was 50/50 and that if his body rejected the new skin, it was all over.

Now, months after the surgery, Hardison is ecstatic and hopes his story will be an inspiration to others such as veterans that have sustained horrific burns that medical science is improving.
