According to a new report from the European Leadership Network, military tensions on the European continent are at their highest levels since the end of the Cold War, which could lead to a war between NATO and Russia in the near future.
With several near-miss incidents, especially in Eastern Europe, the potential for armed conflict is high.

In March 2015, Russia held “snap exercises” with 80,000 troops engaged in long-range deployments. The scale of the exercises made the U.S. and NATO the only possible targets.
In a matching effort in June, NATO held exercises with 15,000 troops that appeared to simulate an invasion of the Crimea region of Ukraine.
The European Leadership Network said:
“We do not suggest that the leadership of either side has made a decision to go to war or that a military conflict between the two is inevitable, but that the changed profile of exercises is a fact and it does play a role in sustaining the current climate of tensions in Europe.”
