Russia-controlled Ukrainian separatists shot down Malaysian Airlines light MH17 this week, killing all 298 on board.
The group has been shooting down other aircraft, and insists on a no-fly zone over its territory. Intercepted calls show they “shot down another one.” They initially claimed credit for the attack, then walked it back once they realized they had shot down a civilian plane.
The leader of that group is a known Russian GRU intelligence officer. Documents obtained when the separatists were flushed from a stronghold indicate he has complete control over military discipline. Russia is calling the shots here.
This isn’t the first time the Russians have done something similar. It happened in 1983.
